{"id":67,"date":"2011-01-20T21:03:07","date_gmt":"2011-01-21T05:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/?p=67"},"modified":"2011-01-20T23:38:07","modified_gmt":"2011-01-21T07:38:07","slug":"bowling-at-varsity-ridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/?p=67","title":{"rendered":"Bowling at Varsity Ridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Bowling_shoes1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-73 alignright\" title=\"Bowling_shoes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Bowling_shoes1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"bowling shoes\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cool thing about doing this blog is that we are forced to try things we have never done before or have not done in a long time.\u00c2\u00a0 This past date night was no exception.\u00c2\u00a0 Pete suggested that we go bowling.\u00c2\u00a0 To be honest, I hadn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t bowled since Gym 7 when I picked bowling as my sport since it was the only one that didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t involve running.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 (I still managed to only get a C+.\u00c2\u00a0 Sports are <em>really<\/em> not my thing.)<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know where one would go to bowl in modern times \u00e2\u20ac\u201c thank goodness for the internet.\u00c2\u00a0 A quick search for <em>bowling in Vancouver<\/em> gave us a few options.\u00c2\u00a0 We chose the bowling alley at Varsity Ridge because it was close to home.\u00c2\u00a0 I often drive by the Ridge Theatre complex on 16<sup>th<\/sup> and Arbutus Street but didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t realize there was a bowling alley there (it is actually on west 15th \u00e2\u20ac\u201c look for the big white bowling pin).\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/balls.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/balls.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-74\" title=\"balls\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/balls-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"bowling balls\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/balls-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/balls-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/balls.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>When we entered the premises, it was like stepping back in time\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6in a really cool way.\u00c2\u00a0 Everything looked very vintage.\u00c2\u00a0 The ceilings were low, the carpet was dark blue with bowling pins on it and yes, there was wood panelling on the walls.\u00c2\u00a0 It was like bowling in your parents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 basement.\u00c2\u00a0 We rented our shoes (yes, they were disinfected and yes, I still brought an extra pair of socks) and were given lucky lane 13.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are two sides to the bowling alley at the Varsity \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the side with lucky lane 13 can be turned into a glow in the dark bowling alley at certain times.\u00c2\u00a0 The cost to bowl was very cheap &#8211; $5 per person per game.\u00c2\u00a0 Our shoe rental was $2.25.\u00c2\u00a0 We grabbed a beer as well (Varsity is licenced) but their food options are limited.\u00c2\u00a0 It would probably be a good idea to make a reservation for a date night because I am guessing it could ge<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Console1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-76 alignleft\" title=\"Console\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Console1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"console\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Console1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Console1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vancouverdatenight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Console1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>t busy at peak times.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t really remember how to bowl but since everything is automated &#8211; the machines keep score for you and tell you when to throw the ball \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it is really easy.\u00c2\u00a0 Essentially, you just throw the ball down the lane and hope 1) it hits some pins 2) it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t fly out of the lane and hit something else.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The vibe was fun.\u00c2\u00a0 There was a great mix of people \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from seniors, to hipsters to young families.\u00c2\u00a0 Everyone was cheering with lots of good natured banter.\u00c2\u00a0 Since it was Pete\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first time bowling, it is no surprise that my score was much higher than his &#8211; mine was 144 and his was 61. Not that I am keeping track.\u00c2\u00a0 Or rubbing it in his face.\u00c2\u00a0 Or taking a picture of it and posting it on a public blog.\u00c2\u00a0 But it is probably the only sporting event where very unathletic me could beat super athletic Pete.\u00c2\u00a0 Ha!\u00c2\u00a0 Yes.
